So this morning I hopped on the train to Shrewsbury, the nearest town to me that had a large cinema, to go watch The Avengers (Assemble) and Lord Almighty is it a damn good movie. Perfectly bringing together four seperate franchises into a story that does not disappoint at all. Since it is still yet to be released in the US I will try and be as spoiler-free as I can.
The story itself feels very much like the opening chapter of something big, especially when you stick around and see the end credits scene which leaves aside previewing the next Marvel movie to forecast The Avengers own sequel which is smart. Very smart. The heroes all have their moments to shine and shine they do in ways that often go beyond what we have seen from them in previous films. Iron Man has more weapons each with their own nod to previous models of his suit (this time we go up to MKVII which is introduced in spectacular fashion). The Black Widow, whose lack of prescence in Iron Man 2 was one of the main bugbears of those who didnt like the movie, is given the credit she deserves finally. Thor, whose lack of full-on God mode frustrated in his first movie gets a chance to slug it out against Iron Man, Captain America and The Hulk.
The Hulk. Man oh man are you going to love the Hulk, especially at the end of the movie when he gets let off the chain and...well for those who have seen the movie probably all laughed their asses off at how he handled one particular opponent. All I'm saying.
There will be gripes once this movie has been fully released across the globe, but only from the nit-pickiest of nit-pickers who dont watch television or movies for the thrill of it but rather to hunt like starving hawks for anything to moan about. But the special effects are solid, the acting is good (and in several cases better) than before - it just feels inherently right. You sit there with this warm glow in your gut thinking "This is how a superhero movie should be."
That is a sentiment I last felt watching The Dark Knight, the sequel of which looks equally awesome and when that is released in a few months time comparisons will be made and lines drawn as those who liked The Avengers and those who worship the air Chris Nolan farts out turn upon one another like Team Jacob and Team Edward (bad choice but apt comparison). But these are two seperate beasts, comparing the two is like comparing skyscrapers - both are fecking HUGE!
So yeah go see the Avengers. You will not regret it at all.
Now to wait for the DVD to be released with its half an hour of deleted scenes.
